Orange County/Los Angeles, California golf course review

Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana California is an 18-hole championship Ted Robinson design located in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains. The most apparent feature of this course is the scenery - although it is located near an upscale residential area, properties that abut the course are not imposing and the mountains offer a beautiful and distracting backdrop to this lushly landscaped layout. Desert grasses, water, numerous strategically placed bunkers, rocks, washes and palms all add to the aesthetics at Sierra Lakes while offering some treacherous hazards to avoid.

Sierra Lakes Golf Club - California Golf Course

The clubhouse at Sierra Lakes is a spacious 20,000 square feet. Inside, guests will find a fully stocked golf shop with a wide variety of apparel and equipment. The indoor/outdoor Sports Bar features 6 large flat screen TVs and offers breakfast and lunch fare daily until 3 p.m.  Banquet and meeting facilities can accommodate up to 400 guests and the catering and tournament staff pay close attention to every detail, ensuring that every event is a phenomenal and memorable success.

Sierra Lakes provides a 40 station driving range with both mats and grass available. This targeted range is a great place to warm up before a round and a large practice green is located right outside of the clubhouse. Customized lessons for individuals or small groups are provided by head instructor Rick Danruther. Teaching since 1989, Dan is one of only a handful of Certified Master Professionals in the U.S.

The picturesque par-72 Sierra Lakes Golf Club is a comfortable, fairly open layout that presents challenges in the form of moguls, fast sloping greens, creeks & water hazards and tricky sand bunkers and waste areas. Four sets of tees ensure a very fair round for players of all skill levels. Back tees play 6,805 yards with a slope of 125 and rating of 73.0. Middle tee boxes measure 6,435 and 6,090 yards with slopes/ratings of 121/71.2 and 117/69.7 respectively. The forward tees are 5,324 yards with a slope of 118 and a rating of 70.7.

The tees, fairways, greens and rough are all delicately manicured and landscaped.  The course is very well marked with tee boxes measured to the center of the green, 100/150/200 yard markers on the cart paths, in the middle of the fairway on all par fours and fives, and sprinkler heads are measured to the center of the green. Rocks located on the side of the fairway indicate 150 yards. Color coded flags indicate the days front, middle or back hole location. The medium to large greens feature gentle undulations and most of them slope back to front offering some tricky pin placements. Fairways offer ample landing areas off the tee, but there are 83 bunkers on the course, and the fairways bunkers along with waste areas can be tricky and should be avoided!

There are four water holes with water in play at Sierra Lakes.  Number 4 is a pretty 184 yard (from the back -123 from the front) par 3. Water guards the large green and long balls will find sand in the back. Number 6 is another par 3 playing 195 from the back. This is the signature hole at Sierra lakes with a carry over sand and water to a green with sand on the right and a beautiful trickling stream on the left. The seventh hole is a par four dogleg left with water on the left, sand on the right of the turn. The large green features a spectacular view view of the mountains as a backdrop. Number nine is a very pretty downhill par 4. Three bunkers on the left and water on the right demand a straight shot off the tee.

Sierra Lakes Golf Club provides country club service and surroundings, spectacular views, and an ideal location. It is only a short drive from cities like San Bernardino, Riverside and Pasadena.  Combined with the immaculate conditions and reasonable rates, we highly recommend a round here. For more information on Sierra Lakes, and a link to it's website - click here.
