THE MALIBU GOLF CLUB (818-889-6680) -closed for renovations
Orange County/Los Angeles, California golf course review
The Malibue Golf Club is a privately owned golf course which extends open play to the public with all the amenities and service of a prestigious private establishment. Situated high above Malibu in the picturesque Santa Monica Mountains, with two natural lakes and rolling, serene terrain, this layout is considered to be one of the LA region's finest golf experiences.
Amenities include a clubhouse with pro shop, locker rooms with showers, plus a nicely appointed restaurant/lounge with outdoor patio. There is no driving range but golfers can warm up on the adjacent hitting nets, and two practice greens for putting and chipping are also on property. Players will also enjoy the UpLink GPS on all carts, which provides accurate information from tee to pin on each hole. There also are ball & club washers on each cart.
There are three sets of tee boxes which play to distances and slopes measuring 6614 yards/132 slope, 6176 yards/126 slope and 5613 yards with a slope of 120 from the forward tees. Besides the GPS, the course uses the Kirby Marking System, with yardage blocks posted on the fairways every 25 yards from 200 to 75 on all par fours and fives.
The topography is extremely hilly and presents significant elevation changes from tee to green, and also affords some outstanding mountain vistas. The rolling fairways are tree-lined - some quite tightly, making accuracy off the tee a necessity. The contoured design of many holes also challenges golfers with some tricky doglegs that require distance as well as proper placement. Players will also encounter some uphill/downhill and sideway lies on the sloping playing surfaces.
There is generally ample recovery room greenside, and the putting surfaces are mildly undulating and medium is size. Land in regulation and good scores can be had. Thirty four sand traps line the fairways or the green complexes, and water hazards come into play on 4 holes - including the sprawling marsh that challenges the tee shot and approach on the beautiful par four ninth. The undulating terrain is the main challenge however, and the changes in elevation also make this one of the most fun courses to play in the area.
If you are in the area, you would be remiss not to play Malibu Country Club...we highly recommend a round here. For more info, visit our page for the course, with direct link to their own website by clicking here.
