MOORPARK COUNTRY CLUB (805-532-2834 )
Orange County/Los Angeles, California golf course review
Moorpark Country Club (North of LA) is an incredible 27-hole Jacobsen/Hardy Golf Design that offers an unmatched sensory experience, featuring outstanding views of the Pacific Ocean and Channel Islands. Situated amongst ridgelines and valleys with holes that meander through arroyos and canyons, Moorpark is also known for its immaculate course conditioning and excellent amenities and service, making this a must play in the LA region. The photos in this review are of the Ridgeline and Creekside nines.
The Country Club atmosphere compliments the adjacent residential community that features spectacular homes by the Toll Brothers. The citrus and avocado ranch countryside in the heart of the county's equestrian community provides a serene setting for residents and for the golfing public. Visitors are treated to panoramic views and superb desert mountain golf.
State of the art practice facilities include three separate putting greens, two chipping areas and a targeted grass range with a private lesson-practice area. A staff of PGA certified instructors is available to assist players for individual or group lessons of all types. Custom club-fitting is available, and lessons can be tailored to meet the needs of any golfer. Driving a cart is mandatory, and each cart is equipped with ice chests plus ball and club washers.
The beautiful clubhouse was designed in the style of Franklyn Lloyd Wright, and features a full service pro shop, Champions Grille & Bar (with a variety of sandwiches and entrees), a beautiful appointed restaurant/lounge, plus extensive special event facilities. A spacious ballroom can accommodate 300 guests for weddings and banquets, and can be converted in theatre style seating for up to 500 people. There also is a wonderfully landscaped garden with gazebo, and the outdoor patio adjacent to the dining area affords scenic golf course views.
There are 5 sets of tee boxes on the Ridgeline (3503,3251, 2980,2682 and 2347 yards), Canyon Crest (3512, 3266, 3031, 2571 and 2499 yards) and Creekside nines (3507, 3284, 3029 and 2737 and 2375 yards). Slope ratings vary from 118 to 138 on the Ridgeline, 118 to 142 on the Creekside and 118 to 136 on Canyon Crest. Pro Link GPS is standard on all carts, and 100, 150 and 200 yard markers are posted on the cart paths, with 150 yard stakes in the center of the fairways on all par fours and fives. Sprinkler heads are measured to the front, middle and back of the manicured greens, which are contoured in a variety of shapes and sizes.
The Ridgeline course presents the most scenic vistas, as the layout climbs up the mountain from holes 2 through four, then plays extremely downhill on holes 5 and 6, with the remaining holes playing through a beautiful valley. From atop the ridge - the views are simply spectacular. The Creekside also features significant elevation changes, with sloping fairways and some considerable carries over arroyos and ravines, especially from the two back tees. Sand bunkering on this combination of nines is understated but strategic, with just 19 sand traps from tee to green. Water comes into play in some shape or form on 11 holes.
There are 14 sand bunkers situated along the fairways or greenside, and two holes have water in play on the Canyon Crest nine. Throughout the 27 holes, golfers will be challenged to maintain their concentration on the shot at hand, as the beautiful vistas can be distracting. Even a bad round is a good day however, as players of all skill levels will appreciate the wonderful conditioning and interesting hole designs.
