RANCHO SAN JOAQUIN GOLF CLUB (949-786-5522)
Orange County/Los Angeles, California golf course review
Rancho San Joaquin in Irvine is an 18-hole championship course that is open for public play and has received 3 stars by Golf Digest Places to Play. The course features good value rates for the region, and features a mildly rolling terrain with scattered tree lines and mild elevation changes from tee to green.
The gently undulating green complexes are most often framed by a series of majestic palm trees that combined with the perimeter mountains, form a great backdrop. As the photos in this review indicate, the greens are approachable from the fronts, as bunkers and mounding are usually situated on the perimeters.
In total 44 contoured sand traps of various shapes and sizes are situated near the landing zones off the tee and more frequently greenside, and water hazards come into play on 7 of the holes. The course winds though a residential community, with homes situated on the perimeters only. Most holes are straightforward, inviting driver off the tee, but several holes also feature doglegs bending in one direction or the other.
There are three sets of tee boxes that play to distances and slopes measuring 6431 yards/128 slope, 6158 yards/125 slope for men and 133 for women, and 5709 yards with a slope of 126 for ladies using the forward tees. 150 yard stakes are positioned in the center of the fairways, and 100, 150 and 200 yard markers are also posted on all par fours and fives. Sprinkler heads are measured to the front, middle and backs of the greens, and pin placement sheets are mounted on each cart.
On property is a clubhouse with pro shop plus restaurant with breakfast and lunch items. Banquet/outing facilities can accommodate up to 100 guests. The adjacent practice facility features 63 stalls with mat turf, 3 putting greens and a short game area with sand bunker that is available for a fee ($6 to use).
