STERLING HILLS GOLF CLUB (805-987-3446)
Orange County/Los Angeles, California golf course review
Sterling Hills Golf Club is a beautiful Robert Muir Graves/Damien Pascuzzo designed championship course that meanders over naturally rolling topography along the hillsides north of LA. The property features a Spanish style clubhouse with lounge and grille (open for breakfast and lunch) and full service banquet/wedding facilities. There is a nicely stocked pro shop and teaching facilities (Grass/mat range plus practice green) are also part of the complex.
Four sets of tees allow golfers to choose from distances and slopes measuring 6813 yards/133 slope, 6257 yards/126 slope, 5906 yards/121 slope and 5245 yards with a slope of 125 for women playing from the forward sets. Bunkering plays a significant role in the design as 73 sand traps are strategically placed along the landing zones or are situated greenside. Water hazards also come into play on 6 holes, providing aesthetic qualities as well as challenge.
On course there are 100, 150 and 200 yard blocks and 150 yard stakes in the center of the fairways of all par fours and fives. A pin placement chart mounted on each cart indicates the day's hole locations, but all the information one needs is available through the Pro Link GPS that is standard on all carts.
The undulating terrain features ample, manicured fairways that are bound by scattered trees and mounds, with landscaping that includes plentiful pampas, as well as strategically placed sand bunkers. The sloping greens are frequently tiered and also are protected by sand traps and contoured mounding.
The layouts winds along a very upscale residential community and many holes are also bordered by beautiful farmlands. The combination creates a wonderful golf environment, on a track that all levels of golfers will find challenging yet extremely enjoyable. Located about 40 minutes northwest of Malibu and priced near the $80 range (including cart) prime time, Sterling presents one of the regions best golf values.
